Topsfield storm comes quick but heavy

Friday’s storm damage was widespread in Topsfield. The outskirts of town were not hit as hard as the center of town as we saw several power lines down, and several trees on top of houses and cars.

“3:30 the storm just blew through really fast,” said Genti and Laura Hysen.

However, don’t let the quick storm deceive you, it was still very strong.

“It was very quick sprinkles and then full-blown wind and rain and then it was over and then the sun was back out,” said Topsfield Fire Chief Jennifer Collins-Brown. “With a wide area of trees, wires, a lot of National Grid work, it is going to be frustrating for people and inconvenient because it’s hot out.”

Averill Street got hit really bad, as crews have been removing uprooted trees, including a tree that fell on top of a home.

When two trees came down on Andrews Farm Road, one of them put a hole through a roof.

“It was the loudest crack, multiple cracks,” said the homeowner Amy. “It was just after 3 o’clock and I’m like ‘What a lovely day in the house’ and it started to rain and I didn’t even know it was supposed to rain today so I started to open my weather app to see how long it was going to rain and before I could even open it, ‘Crash, bang, boom’ on my roof.”

A tree on Topsfield Road just missed the home but did hit their deck.

And on Washington Street, many residents spent the evening without power after a tree fell on power lines.

“You didn’t hear anything really,” said Genti & Laura. “The rain started to come down and the rain started to go sideways next thing you know power went out.”

The fire chief said if you see a lot of wires down throughout town, you should consider all of them to be live, and stay away from them.
