Suspected rapist wanted by Deerfield Police captured in Florida Tuesday

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Jeffrey Cancel-Muniz, who was wanted by the Deerfield Police Department on alleged rape charges, was captured Tuesday in Kissimmee, Fla. after an employee at a motel in the city recognized him from a Mass. State Police wanted poster.

Cancel-Muniz, 40, is a Level 3 Sex Offender and was wanted on charges of aggravated rape with serious bodily injury, kidnapping, strangulation/suffocation, and rape for a violent sexual assault. Those charges stem from an alleged sexual assault that occurred in May 2020.

State Police placed Cancel-Muniz on its Most Wanted List in March of this year before receiving a tip in early April that he might be in Kissimmee, Fla. after fleeing Massachusetts. On Monday night, a desk clerk for Travelodge in Kissimmee notified police that Cancel-Muniz was a guest at the motel after an issue between the two prompted the employee to search Cancel-Muniz’s name online.

Just after midnight Tuesday, police arrested Cancel-Muniz on the outstanding warrants. He will appear in Florida court while awaiting rendition to Massachusetts for the Deerfield charges.
