Massport, Eversource prepare for winter storm

BOSTON — Days ahead of a massive pre-Christmas storm that is expected to hit the area with strong winds and heavy rain, officials at Massport and Eversource say they are preparing to handle whatever comes our way.

At Logan International Airport Wednesday, travelers were catching their planes ahead of the storm and making it out of Boston just in time.

“I’m stoked,” said Nick Lundeberg a UMass Amherst student. “Coming from Georgia, I don’t like the snow too much, but I’m excited to miss all that.”

At Logan, they are gearing up with staffing and preparing for the storm

They believe they are ready.

Boston will experience heavy rain and winds gusting up to sixty miles an hour.

Officials here say travelers can expect delays, especially from flights traveling through hubs impacted by snow in the Midwest.

Best advice: be patient.

“If you’re travelling in an area that’s going to be impacted, I’d ask that you check with the airline before you head to the airport. Give yourself about two hours on the domestic side of the business and internationally I’d give yourself about three hours,” said Massport Aviation Director Ed Freni.

Meanwhile, Eversource is bracing for a potential Level 3 storm, one that has the potential to knock out power to up to 70 thousand customers.

For Eversource, it’s all hands on deck. Vacations are cancelled. More than a thousand crews will be in the field, ready for the worst.

The major threat: wind.

“With wind, high winds, steady wind will come damage from trees, branches, trees coming over,” said Craig Hallstrom of Eversource.

Eversource is asking its customers to prepare for the storm, making sure all devices are fully charged before the storm strikes.
