Health officials report positive rabies case in Dorchester cat

BOSTON — Health officials are warning the public after they say they identified a positive case of rabies in a stray cat Monday afternoon.

A stray, unneutered male orange and white cat was found in front of 132 Glenway Street in Dorchester exhibiting neurologic behavior, according to Boston Animal Control. The cat was reportedly sickly looking as well. Officials transported the feline to Angell Animal Hospital for evaluation where he was confirmed rabies positive.

The Boston Public Health Commission is asking anyone who recognizes this cat or if you believe you have been in contact with a cat matching this description within the past 21 days to contact their infectious disease bureau at 617-534-5611.

Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease for animals, and can spread to humans and pets through bites and scratches. Rabies in humans can be prevented through appropriate medical care and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Officials are reminding pet owners to make sure their furry friends are up-to-date on their rabies vaccination.
