Storm leaves families in the cold 24 hours later and remote students out of class

MILLIS, Mass. — For Millis resident Walter Kelly, it’s been more than 24 hours since a fast-moving storm went right past his home.

“It just came out of nowhere and it looked almost like a tornado,” said Kelly. “It was just whizzing through with high winds. It was here and gone before you even knew it.”

“The flash and then everything was out,” said neighbor Yvonne Pinkey. “Powerful, intense it was just very quick, and then it was over.”

Wednesday’s storms throughout the state may be over, but the cleanup remains. In Millis, crews spent Thursday fixing powerlines. One pole snapped in half from a tree knocked down by the storm.

“The next house over it was a huge tree,” said Pinkey. “It was very windy and whatever took it took all the lines and it came down everything came down.”

While the cleanup continues, so do the headaches that come with no power.

“I went to my friend’s house to do homework,” said MassBay freshman Sara Schildwachter, who had to tell her professors that her power outage also means she’s out for Thursday’s remote lessons. “They were understanding, a little annoyed I guess. It’s already hard enough as it is and this is just an extra thing.”

Some schools gave kids the day off, but no days off for parents or caregivers especially when they can’t use the stove or refrigerator.

“Dunkin' Donuts and McDonald’s,” said Pinkey. “It’s challenging with an 86-year-old mother, we’ve been driving around. I can’t make anything plus she takes medicine.”

“Good thing it’s warm out, that’s a plus,” said Kelly.

There was decent weather during the day, but families were left preparing for temps in the 30s overnight.

“That’s all right, there’s no snow or anything like that,” said Kelly. “'30s is not too bad. We have four walls and there are people with worse predicaments.”
