DA: Barre man charged with murdering his landlord

BARRE, Mass. — The Massachusetts State Police and the Worcester County DA’s office are investigating a homicide in Barre.

Barre Police received a 911 call just before 8:30 a.m. Friday from a man saying he had just killed another man, officials announced at a news conference.

Police responded to 113 Town Farm Road where they found a man dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say Robert Leger of Barre was arrested and charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Officials said they believe the victim is Leger’s landlord.

The victim was identified as Michael Hannon.

Court paperwork Boston 25 News obtained from the clerk says Leger told police “I thought it would be weird to be in this position, to shoot someone.”

Blake Rubin, the attorney representing Leger told us “All I know is my client is distraught he’s extremely, he feels sick. He’s a 71-year-old man with no criminal history other than that I’m not going to comment On any of these allegations other than saying it’s a terrible tragedy for everybody involved, it’s awful.”

Police spoke with a witness who also lives at the property and heard gunshots. She said Leger handed her an envelope of cash and said it was for her granddaughters then made a comment about going to prison.

Leger is being held without bail.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing.
