Several cars struck by bullets in Cambridge neighborhood, residents unsettled by gunfire

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Michaelle woke up to the sound of gunfire Wednesday morning in Cambridge.

“It was multiple gunshots and it wasn’t just like, ‘Pow, pow, it was like pa-pa-pa-pa-pa, pa-pa-pa-pa-pow.’ It was crazy and it woke me up,” said Michaelle, who didn’t want to give her last name.

She later learned seven cars around her block were struck by bullets, leaving some windows shattered.

She says she was a victim to a similar shooting here just a few weeks ago.

“My last car, which was a Nissan Versa got hit back there, there was a bullet hole in the back of my window,” said Michaelle.

Cambridge police say this shooting took place by the corner of Main Street and Portland Street around 2 a.m.

Luckily no one was hurt, but police are concerned about the uptick in gun violence here.

“This is the fifth shooting that we’ve had within that vicinity since July 15 and for Cambridge, a really quiet, safe city, that’s a much higher volume than we’re accustomed to and people are used to,” said Jeremy Warnick, communications director for the Cambridge Police Department.

Police say of the 11 shootings so far this year, nine of them took place just in this small neighborhood.

“Trying to look at these, not just individually, but also holistically in terms of how there may be any sort of connections or patterns between these individual shootings and what we’ve seen over the course of the year,” said Warnick.

Cambridge Police say they’ve been increasing patrols in the area and they’re meeting with community partners, like the Housing Authority, to figure out ways to curb this violence, but they need the community’s help.

“This is something that we need as much support as possible, we need as much input,” said Warnick. “As little as information people believe may be could be really critical in helping us address some of these issues.”

So far no arrests have been made from this shooting, but if you have any information that can help, call Cambridge Police.
