Republican Chris Doughty announces run for Massachusetts governor

WRENTHAM, Mass. — Wrentham businessman Chris Doughty has tossed his hat into the growing field of candidates running for governor of Massachusetts.

Doughty, a Republican, says he’s running as “a fiscally responsible businessman.”

“In this election, voters will have the crucial choice between the steady fiscal policies I will offer or unrestrained spending and policies that will burden our families,” said Doughty in a statement on Wednesday.

He joins Republican candidate Geoff Diehl. a former GOP state representative from Whitman and a President Donald Trump supporter, who announced his candidacy before Governor Charlie Baker announced he would not seek another term.

The three announced Democratic candidates for governor are all women, in a state that has never elected a woman to the office. Last week, Attorney General Maura Healey joined fellow Democrats, Harvard professor Danielle Allen and state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz.

Doughty is married with six children.

In a campaign statement, Doughty said he and his business partner built a small manufacturing company into a multinational business, including a facility in Massachusetts with three hundred employees.

“During the course of this campaign, you will hear me advocate that reducing regulations and implementing common sense reforms will bring down our costs much quicker and longer term for our citizens than more government regulations and controls,” said Doughty.

The Massachusetts state primary is in September and the state election is November 8.
