Report: DB Jalen Mills stays with Patriots on revised deal, plans position switch

FOXBORO, Mass — Less than a week after the Patriots reportedly cut the veteran defensive back, Jalen Mills is reportedly back in New England, expecting to embrace a new role.

Mills accepted an offer to return to Foxboro for a third season the day after his release, according to The Score’s Jordan Schultz. According to Schultz, Mills reportedly plans to switch to safety.

Mills has spent the past two seasons as New England’s primary No. 2 corner, first playing opposite J.C. Jackson in 2021 and then Jonathan Jones in 2022.

The Patriots had a hole to fill in their defensive backfield after the retirement of free safety Devin McCourty. While Mills’ has spent most of his career lining up across from opposing wide receivers, the 28-year-old has spent time at safety before. In his last season with Philadelphia in 2020, Mills tallied 74 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 1 interception as the Eagle’s starting FS.

Mills seemed to throw his hat in the ring as the Patriots’ McCourty replacement earlier this month, writing “Y’all know I really play safety right?” on Twitter.

The deal is worth up to $6.1 million, according to ESPN Adam Schefter.
