Plymouth opens warming shelter as town braces for power outages from whipping winds

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Plymouth town officials opened a warming shelter Saturday morning as they brace for potentially widespread power outages.

The wind was whipping early Saturday morning causing streetlights to flicker on and off.

The town opened a warming shelter at Plymouth North High School at 6 a.m.

“If you need a ride to the shelter, please call the Plymouth police station at 508-746-1212,” Plymouth Police Chief Dana Flynn said. “Take care of you and your families, and as a community, watch out for your neighbors.”

The wind was so strong Saturday morning, it ripped some shingles off the roof of the beachfront Pilgrim Sands Hotel.

Chief Flynn is encouraging people to stay home and off the roads, but if they must go out, he is urging them to turn around if they encounter a road that is closed.

“If you do have to travel and you come across any cones or barrels, we ask you to avoid that area,” Flynn said. “That means there’s either trees down, wires down, or the road is otherwise unpassable. Due to the size of the storm we’re expecting, we will not have enough manpower to stay at every detour.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
