Multi-town police chase ends in Boston

DORCHESTER, Mass — State Police were led on a pursuit from Westboro all the way into Boston, ending in Dorchester. State Police said they used discretion when the suspect entered a construction zone.

Boston 25 News cameras were there where the suspect was apprehended on the expressway near the gas tanks in Dorchester. State Police said Matthew Geowey was behind the wheel. He appeared in court in Westboro where his attorney told the judge he suffers from schizophrenia and failed to take his prescribed medication.

The pursuit started in Westboro after someone called 911 saying the suspect was swerving in and out of lanes. Worcester County ADA Michael Luzzo explained what happened in court.

“The suspect drove through a construction area that was coned off. At that point the pursuit was terminated for public safety concerns,” Luzzo said.

According to court documents, State Police called off the pursuit when the suspect went into a single lane construction zone and tried passing people. Boston 25 News Law Enforcement analyst Dan Linskey explained police agencies always have a specific policy on how to handle these situations.

“Oftentimes pursuits are sometimes more dangerous than the underlying offense which the person is being pursued for,” Linskey said.

Linskey said, when he was Superintendent in Chief for Boston Police, supervisors would oversee these decisions over the radio.

“Supervisors need to be quarterbacking those events from the ops center or even on the road,” Linskey said.

State Police told us every pursuit is authorized by a shift commander, and each pursuit is constantly monitored for public safety concerns and every pursuit reviewed after.

“Why we initiated the pursuit, was it appropriate based on our rules and regulations, did we condition the pursuit appropriately when it got called off,” Linskey said.

State Police were able to end the pursuit by using stop sticks to blow out the suspect’s tires on the Pike.

“That did not work, but the vehicle was operating on the rims and he went all the way to the Prudential tunnel,” Linskey said.

The suspect managed to drive on his rims for several miles but State Police apprehended him over on the expressway in Dorchester. State Police said they have a very rigorous pursuit policy.
