Mother’s Day customers boost some local businesses

MEDFIELD, Mass. — It’s the busiest day of the year for flower shops like Lovell’s Florist and Nursery in Medfield.

Owner Laverne Lovell says they’ve been swamped all day Saturday with shoppers looking for the perfect flowers for Mother’s Day.

“I haven’t done the books yet, but I think it’s probably going to top last year,” said Lovell.

She says last year was actually their busiest year ever during the height of the pandemic.

After every everything shut down, most people relied on deliveries last Mother’s Day.

“And then when you got to the door they said, drop the arrangement on the doorstep and back off, my little delivery guy was like ‘okay,” said Lovell.

This Mother’s Day finally feels a bit normal as more and more people get vaccinated and the weather gets nicer.

For many, this is the first holiday weekend they’re reuniting with family and friends.

While this Mother’s Day feels more normal, the pandemic is still affecting business.

Lovell says there’s been a flower shortage this year, which has been driving up the prices.

“There were a lot of things we couldn’t get that didn’t come in on time, there’s a lot – not so much the shortage but the transportation getting it here, the trucking, the airlines – a lot of disconnect in the supply line,” said Lovell.

Lovell says because of the flower shortage and transportation issues nationwide, they have increased prices by about 10 percent, but she says they still have plenty of flowers to sell and will be open Sunday for Mother’s day if you’re still looking for that last minute gift.
