Phase 3 of reopening begins in Somerville, two months behind rest of state

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone has given the greenlight for some Phase 3 businesses to reopen Tuesday, more than two months behind the rest of Massachusetts.

Starting Tuesday, fitness clubs, health clubs, martial arts studios, dance studios, and yoga facilities can all reopen. Non-athletic instructional classes and television, motion picture and streaming productions can also resume in the city.

Some Phase 3 activities must remain on hold in Somerville, including movie theaters, outdoor theaters, outdoor performance venues and indoor historical sites.

While gyms are allowed to reopen Tuesday, it won’t be business as usual. Patrons must wear face coverings at all times, even during strenuous activity. People must sign up in advance for fitness classes, and there will be strict limits on the number of people allowed inside at one time.

“With the data and the indicators all heading in the right direction, we felt it was safe and practical to allow for a limited expansion,” Curtatone told Boston 25 News. “We are being guided by science. We are listening to the highest level of expertise -- both health experts and epidemiologists.”
