‘I’m never going hiking with her again’: Two girls rescued from Townsend forest after becoming lost

TOWNSEND, Mass. — Authorities rescued a 16-year-old and an 8-year-old from Townsend State Forest Monday night after the girls got lost while on a hike, according to police.

Officials say the pair called their mom after two hours of hiking near Dudley Road and claimed they couldn’t find their way out. Their mother then called Townsend Police and Officers Michael Marchand and Christopher Low coordinated with dispatch to track the GPS location of the girls’ original 911 call, according to officials.

The officers responded to the area of Barker Hill Road where Officer Low blew an air horn to try to get the girls’ attention. The pair confirmed they were able to hear the horn and were located a short time later.

Police say the entire operation from the initial dispatch call to locating the girls took about 20 minutes.

“To quote the 8-year-old, ‘I’m never going hiking with her again,’” Townsend Police wrote in a social media post.

The mother even dropped off cookies at the station to thank Officers Marchand and Low.
