LAKEVILLE, Mass. — A barn located on a family-owned cranberry farm in Massachusetts was destroyed after a raging blaze broke out on Thursday night.
Crews responding to “at least seven 911 calls” for a large structure fire in the area of Southworth Street in Lakeville just before 7 p.m. learned a neighborhood resident heard a loud explosion that shook his home before spotting flames engulfing a shop and storage area on the Angers Conway Farm, according to the Lakeville Fire Department.
Horses and other farm animals were relocated from a nearby barn and firefighters spent more than five hours working to knock down the flames, officials said.
“Fortunately, firefighters were able to keep the fire from jumping to the next building,” the department said in a statement.
Officials said water tankers had to be called in due to the lack of hydrants in the area and that freezing conditions made the scene hazardous for firefighters.
There were no reported injuries.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, firefighters noted that it doesn’t appear suspicious at this time.
Angers Conway Farm was established in 1920 as a dairy farm by George C. Angers and his wife, Octavia. Cranberry bogs were later constructed on the property in the 1980s.
