Lawrence police officer hurt after being pinned by fleeing car

LAWRENCE, Mass. — An investigation is underway after a driver hit a Lawrence police officer while allegedly attempting to flee early Tuesday morning and a second officer fired his weapon at the car, officials said.

According to Lawrence police, officers were investigating a reported break-in on Springfield Street in South Lawrence around 11:45 p.m.

“Upon arriving on scene, officers came upon a vehicle attempting to flee the area at high rate of speed,” Lawrence police said in a Facebook post. “The vehicle struck a Lawrence police officer, pinning him in place.”

At that point, Lawrence police said a second officer fired his gun at the car.

The officer who was hit by the car suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries to his leg and foot. He was treated on scene by paramedics and EMTs from Lawrence General Hospital and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. He was later air-lifted to a hospital in Boston.

A short police chase ended after the suspect’s car crashed on Crawford Street.

One suspect was arrested, and police say they are actively searching for additional suspects. The Massachusetts State Police Air Wing and K9 Section are assisting Lawrence Police in the search for the suspects.

State police detectives assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office are assisting with the investigation into the officer firing his gun while on duty, as is standard protocol.
