Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum closed Saturday due to planned protest

BOSTON — The Isabell Stewart Gardner Museum was closed Saturday due to a planned protest from climate activists.

The protest, planned to coincide with the 33rd anniversary of the Gardner Art Heist, may have put visitors and artwork at risk, museum officials said in a statement.

“After careful consideration, and an abundance of caution for the safety of our staff, volunteers, visitors and collection, we made the difficult decision to remain closed for the day,” the Isabella Gardner Museum stated. “While it is our mission to uphold Isabella’s values, we do not support this type of tactic that targets art institutions and could possibly put the Museum’s collection, staff and visitors at risk.”

Anyone that had a ticket will be refunded the full amount.

The museum staff is planning to reopen the building on Sunday.
