Hundreds turn out for night of giving back in Norwell

NORWELL, Mass. — It was a night of giving back in Norwell. Hundreds of families turned out for Vinal Elementary School’s first Winter Walk. The school partnered with local charities like the Norwell Food Pantry and Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore.

“Some of the charities came from our student government representatives. They wanted to give back to local charities,” said Vinal Principal, Nate Thorsteinson. “I think we’re very lucky to live where we live. I think our students are aware of that and wanted to give back to those less fortunate. I couldn’t be more proud of the work they’ve done.”

During the three-hour event, stacks of toys, food, and warm clothes were piled high around the giving tree, which will be distributed to those in need. The event also featured local vendors, some who were affected by the pandemic, so it allowed small businesses to showcase and sell their goods.

It was a night for fun, too. The event, which was put on by the school PTO featured games, singing performances, food trucks, hayrides, themed story walks, and meet and greets with the Grinch.

The event marked the first time in nearly two years the school was able to gather as a community. Thorsteinson said one of the school’s goals this year was to reengage families and called the event a great success.

“It’s been amazing,” said Thorsteinson. “It’s been so nice to see families and students with their masks off. We haven’t seen some of these faces in quite a while. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see it.”
