Haverhill police searching for hit-and-run driver who struck 84-year-old

HAVERHILL, Mass. — Police in Haverhill are searching for a hit and run driver who knocked an 84-year-old man to the ground and then took off.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning as Angelo Magliocchetti was walking the family dog.

Angelo’s son, who is a Haverhill School Committee member, told Boston 25 News the driver of a light blue vehicle stopped for a few moments before leaving.

Paul Magliocchetti said the driver didn’t even bother to check on his father or call 911.

“The car clipped him with the mirror. It hit him on the elbow and then he went down,” said Paul Magliocchetti, the victim’s son. “How could you leave someone lying on the side of the road?”

The family dog’s Rosco immediately reacted to the situation, barking to alert Angelo’s wife.

“When my dad got up, he said go get nana. He ran to the house and started barking for my mother. She knew something was wrong,” he explained.

Linda Magliocchetti told Boston 25 News that drivers often speed down the street that doesn’t have sidewalks.

“Maybe this driver was texting or talking on the phone and maybe didn’t realize someone was there,” said Linda Magliocchetti, the victim’s wife.

Angelo Magliocchetti was transported to Anna Jacques Hospital where he will remain overnight for evaluation.

“He’s doing well. He’s in good spirits,” added Paul Magliocchetti. “They detected an irregular heartbeat. They’re worried the shock of the hit might have caused it.”

Haverhill Police are now investigating and reviewing surveillance footage from the area in hopes of getting more answers.

Anyone who has additional information about the incident is asked to call Detective Kevin Portnoy at 978-373-1212, ext. 1552.
