Florida residents in Boston relay stories of loss amid ‘the worst storm ever’

BOSTON — Rick Scafidi has Boston roots and ventured north tonight after his Naples home, like many others, was flooded.

“It’s just not worth the risk,” said Rick Scafidi.

“We’ve probably been thru half-a-dozen of these, this is by far the worst,” he said.

He and his wife left ahead of Hurricane Ian to stay in Fort Lauderdale. He hasn’t been back, but a neighbor told him his home suffered significant damage. “We have three feet of water from what we’re told our two cars are under water — destroyed — and a boat, gone,” said Scafidi.

Boston 25 reached Bridgewater native in Florida, who’s trying to let family know he’s ok.

“I’m driving around trying to find a signal — because I am trying to reach out to my family — because there’s Facebook, there’s no cell phone service,” said Frank Micciantuono who is a Boston area native.

And Andrew Kapanoske is from Palm Beach County. He says they got seven plus inches of rain but that’s not all.

“A lot of rain and wind. A few tornado warnings too, like I said I think one touched down three miles from my house,” said Andrew Kapanoske who lives in Palm Beach County

As for Scafidi he and his wife will head back Sunday to face the long clean up ahead.

“So, we have a hotel room we’ll stay when we get back and — we’ll stay there three weeks — and just deal with the clean up and the fix up,” said Scafidi.

Most major airports on Florida’s West Coast are expected to reopen on Friday.
