Fire breaks out inside Mercedes dealership in Lynnfield

LYNNFIELD, Mass. — Firefighters responded to a car dealership on Route 1 in Lynnfield early Thursday morning after a car on the showroom floor apparently caught fire.

Lynnfield Fire Chief Glenn Davis said the fire started in a car that was on the Mercedes-Benz showroom floor at Flagship Motorcars of Lynnfield, on Route 1 north. Security guards for the dealership first noticed the fire when they saw a “glow” coming from the showroom as they were securing the doors.

Davis said at one point there was zero visibility inside the showroom due to smoky conditions, but firefighters were able to contain the flames to the single car that caught fire. The building’s sprinkler system was working and kicked on, likely preventing more damage.

The dealership is owned by Herb Chambers, which had two Lamborghinis stolen from inside another dealership it owns in Wayland earlier this week.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Davis said it does not appear to be suspicious. The State Fire Marshal has been called in to assist in the investigation.
