Falmouth residents and vacationers prepare for Henri

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Ferries leaving Martha’s Vineyard were packed with people and cars on Friday. That’s nothing unusual in August but on this day, there was a sudden sense of urgency among many onboard.

“We were nervous about the hurricane,” said Elle Ronaldo of New York. Her family also has a house on the Vineyard but wanted to get off the island before Henri blows through.

“We were nervous about the hurricane. We’re supposed to get our car off on Monday but it’s going to be canceled and we didn’t want to get stuck there,” said Renaldo.

Her family is headed back to upstate New York.

However, other New Yorkers in Falmouth and on vacation aren’t leaving; they’re actually staying put.

“We’re probably just going to stay an extra day. We are not leaving. I don’t like to drive in bad weather,” said Eva Jankowsky from New York.

And while bad weather is imminent but just how bad is unclear. So, Brett and Vanessa Grasse will be hunkering down locally too. They live in Falmouth and like many here they pulled their boat from the water.

“Got to get prepared and just want to make sure that the boat is safe,” said Brett Grasse.

The couple has  five-month-old twins at home and didn’t want to have any other concerns.

“Give a little peace of mind at night when we are hanging out with her family. Keeping our kids safe,” said Grasse.

So, moving their 17-foot Boston Whaler to higher ground made sense even if Henri’s path brings it ashore west of Woods Hole.

“This seems like it might be one of the larger storms we’ve seen here in the last few years. Might as well just be safe,” said Grasse.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
