Driver dies after crashing into tree in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH, Mass. — The driver of a speeding car died after hitting a tree Thursday night on Old Main Street, the Yarmouth Police Department said.

An officer on patrol witnessed the car traveling at an “extremely high rate of speed” just before 11:15 p.m. Thursday on Old Main Street in South Yarmouth, according to a news release. The officer attempted to follow the car, but lost sight of the vehicle. About two minutes later, the officer found the car near River Street where the driver had apparently crashed into a tree.

The driver, whose identity has not been released pending notification of family, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. The car did not have any passengers.

The crash remains under investigation.
