Dog rescued from local quarry by Quincy firefighters

QUINCY, Mass. — A dog is safe and back with his family after a close call at the Quincy Quarry Tuesday. That family is crediting the Quincy Fire Department with saving their dog’s life. “He’s done a lot of things, but not this. He’s a nut,” said Jim Phinney.

Otis, a 2-year-old chocolate lab, belongs to Phinney’s daughter, Julie Nason. Otis, who gets a bit rambunctious, had a harrowing Tuesday afternoon. “He was crying and I couldn’t find him and I thought he was gone,” said Nason.

Nason says she was taking Otis out for a walk on her lunch break when he took off down the quarry near the water at Granite Links. Sky 25 flew over the Quarry Tuesday afternoon. Julie says Otis was stuck at least 25 feet down for about 15 minutes. He couldn’t make his way back up and Julie couldn’t make her way down. She called 911. “The call came in as a dog fell into the Quarry, possibly into the water,” said Quincy Fire Department Deputy Chief Steven Baylis.

Baylis says Engine 5 is just down the street and firefighters arrived moments later. The first firefighter to get to Otis was Lt. Dan Duncan. “When he got to the bottom, the dog actually jumped into the water. I don’t know if he got spooked or scared, so Lt. Duncan was actually able to reach out grab him, pull him out of the water and hold him there,” Baylis said.

Otis wasn’t hurt, he was just scared. Julie credits Quincy firefighters with saving Otis’ life. “Thank you so much to the Quincy Fire Department,” she said.

Julie says as a token of appreciation, she had a bunch of pizzas delivered to the firehouse Tuesday night.
