Eversource works to fix equipment that led to two manhole fires

Crews respond to a manhole fire in Boston

BOSTON — Eversource crews and firefighters were on scene Sunday morning in Boston after getting a call around 1 a.m. that multiple manholes were smoking around the Union Street area. The company said it will likely be there for the next few days fixing the problem and working with the city.

Eversource said it believes two manholes caught fire because of an equipment issue that led to a cable line bursting.

Around 20 customers, mostly businesses, were without power for many hours, but most were restored by 9:30 a.m. Only three are now without power, they’re using generators, and crews expect to have power restored within the next hour.

Traffic lights near Congress, Union and North Streets are all out causing road closures.
