Chinatown rape suspect appears in 1st court appearance but not 2nd

BOSTON, Mass. — A wanted sex offender accused of a sexual assault over the weekend appeared in court Thursday.

Prosecutors say once police put out pictures of Edwin Fantauzzi, 33, of Lawrence, they got a few calls that led to his arrest. In court, we learned there was surveillance video of this suspect before, during, and after the alleged assault; and some of the pictures were taken from that brave victim.

Fantauzzi now faces multiple charges including rape, sexual assault, and resisting arrest.

“He continued to flail and kicked his legs at officers,” said a prosecutor in court. “While doing so he yelled at an officer to just shoot me now several times.”

In his first scheduled appearance Thursday, officers rolled him into court in a wheelchair. He kept his head down in his Patriots hoodie, covering his face as much as possible.

Fantauzzi was supposed to make his way to a courtroom in the Central Division, but his defense said he wasn’t feeling well.

Still, that didn’t stop the judge from hearing the disturbing details of the case.

Assistant District Attorney Bader Abueid says he asked a woman to use her bathroom in her Harrison Avenue apartments and when she said no and tried to shut the door, he forced his way in and raped her.

Abueid also says Fantauzzi has a long rap sheet spanning several states including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Florida.

He is being held without bail and will be back in court on May 26th.
