Charges brought against Everett man accused of charging police with sword

EVERETT, Mass. — A 45-year-old Everett man has been charged after officials allege he charged at local police with a sword Monday before officers shot him, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said. That man, identified as Jason Gaff, faces three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police were originally called to the apartment building on Bucknam Street just after midnight Monday after Gaff’s girlfriend’s daughter called police saying the suspect was threatening her mother and her. Officials allege that Gaff brandished a knife at police, said he had a gun and broke the windows of an apartment with a sword.

Police tried shooting less-than-lethal rounds to subdue Gaff, but they say it had no effect. An Everett officer then shot the suspect, who was treated on-site and taken to a local hospital. He is expected to survive.

An Everett officer was also transported to an area hospital as a precaution.
