Celebration of life held for fallen NH state trooper

MANCHESTER, N.H. — A somber day honoring a New England hero. New Hampshire State Troopers escorting the flag-draped casket of their fallen brother, Staff Sgt. Jesse Sherrill.

Hundreds of police officers from around the region celebrated the life of the 44-year-old trooper, along with members of the youth baseball team Sherrill coached. Sherrill’s lifelong friends remember him as incredibly selfless and a guy you could always count on, who led by example.

“He was, without a doubt, the best man we have ever known and it was an honor to be his friend for over 30 years,” said Dan Mariotto.

Staff Sgt. Sherrill died after his cruiser was hit by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 shortly after midnight in Portsmouth last Thursday while working a construction detail.

“He was always the hardest worker in the room, his uniform was impeccable and his mentoring abilities were second to none,” said Col. Nathan Noyes, director of New Hampshire State Police.

Staff Sgt. Sherrill joined the New Hampshire State Police in 2002. He was known as a trooper’s trooper, but a family man first, devoted to his wife and children. “Always remember how much he loved you.

He left behind an incredible legacy, while none of us can ever fill his shoes please know you’re not alone. Your dad will always be watching over you,” Mariotto said.

In addition to his two children, Peyton and Quinn, Staff Sgt. Sherrill leaves behind his wife, Nicolle.

A private burial for family-only followed the service. Staff Sgt. Sherrill is the 10th New Hampshire State Trooper to die in the line of duty in the department’s 84-year history.
