Bundle up, Massachusetts! An arctic blast will surge in later this week and send temps plummeting

BOSTON — Massachusetts is in for a wake-up call later this week when an arctic blast surges into the region with freezing temperatures and dangerous wind chills.

The brutally cold air is expected to arrive late in the week, bringing a potential temperature drop that could reach below zero.

Monday was partly sunny to start, with high temps in the upper 40s, reaching 50s in some areas.

Light rain and snow showers moved through for the Tuesday morning commute then temps should start falling. High temps will reach the mid-30s.

Wednesday will be a bright sunny day, but see temps will continue to drop, and could only see the low 30s. Temps should rebound a bit on Thursday into the high 30s amid partly sunny skies.

Then the arctic blast arrives on Friday. High temps will be in the upper to mid-20s in the morning, but then it will be turning colder in the afternoon. Windy conditions are also expected.

“The big story will be the arrival of arctic air Friday night into Saturday night,” the National Weather Service tweeted. “Low temps in the single digits both above and below zero are possible Saturday morning. Even lower wind chills.”

The National Weather Service released a map of expected temperatures late Friday into Saturday showing wind chills of negative 20s and 30s around the region.

Boston 25 Meteorologist Shiri Spear said, “This is a dangerous cold that will result in frostbite of exposed skin in 10-30 minutes.”

As an early notice, residents should consider taking action to prepare for this artic air, including making contingency plans for your home, pets and cars.

Spear noted that these expected freezing temperatures are the coldest temp readings in the last decade.
