Brockton Police call off pursuit after driver in stolen car nearly collides head-on with cruiser

BROCKTON, Mass. — Police are looking for a suspected hit-and-run driver in a stolen car who narrowly collided with a Brockton police cruiser Monday evening, spokesman Darren Duarte told Boston 25 News.

Duarte said officers spotted a stolen 2013 white Audi A4 on Newbury Street just before 5:30 p.m. They followed the car to intersection of Belmont Street and activated their cruiser’s emergency lights and sirens.

The driver didn’t stop, so officers chased the car down Arlington and West Elm streets, according to Duarte.

“The person behind the wheel of the Audi was driving dangerously,” Duarte said. “The car was swerving in and out of traffic and going through red lights.”

As police were chasing after the Audi on West Street, another cruiser was driving toward the car in the opposite direction.

“The officer in the second cruiser swerved away from the Audi as the sedan almost struck the squad car,” said Duarte.

The officers called off the pursuit on Belmont Street, near the VA Medical Center.

About a mile down the road, a woman flagged down officers to tell them a white Audi hit her Lexus while racing past her toward Easton. The woman wasn’t hurt and her car suffered minor damage to the back bumper, according to Duarte.

Brockton Police alerted Massachusetts State Police, Easton Police and police in other area departments to be on the lookout for the stolen car which had Massachusetts license plate 8SV577 attached.

Anyone who sees the car is urged to contact police.
