Boston 25 teams up with Veterans, Inc. to serve donated Thanksgiving meals to veterans

WORCESTER, Mass. — Dean Fisher is a disabled veteran from Worcester. He served eight years in the Marines and eight more in the U.S. Army.

“If it wasn’t for here, Thanksgiving would be a different place for me it would scavenging trying to put things together,” he said.

Fisher is on a fixed income and gets paid once a month. He and hundreds of other veterans, like Bill Korkorian, who served in Vietnam, filled up their shopping carts full of turkeys and all the fixings for their Thanksgiving meals Tuesday at the Veterans, Inc. headquarters in Worcester.

“I think it’s kind of an opportunity to get together and feel the benefit of being given something back,” Korkorian said.

This is the 20th year that Veterans, Inc. held its Holiday Harvest for those men and women who served our country and now may need a little help. Each year Boston 25 partners with Veterans, Inc. to participate in their Holiday Harvest. More than 500 donated turkeys were given out. They will feed 500 veteran families and more than 3,000 people this Thanksgiving. Veterans, Inc. also handed out thousands of pounds of potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, canned food and pies.

The nonprofit is the largest provider of support services to veterans and their families in New England and this event is one of its biggest.

“These people are seeing they are getting a holiday and who better to have a holiday than those men and women who defended our country and protected us and they should have a holiday,” said Vincent Perrone, president and CEO of Veterans, Inc.

A small gesture of thanks to so many who gave so much.

“When you don’t have to worry about things. It allows you to enjoy Thanksgiving for what it’s for. I’m appreciative and I’m thankful for what it is. It makes you appreciate it,” Fisher said.
