Big changes in store for historic Massachusetts lighthouse

SCITUATE, Mass. — Big changes are in store for a historic Massachusetts lighthouse that has served as a beacon for navigational aid for more than 200 years.

Officials say a contractor will begin preparing for the removal of the lantern room at Scituate Lighthouse on Wednesday amid lingering safety concerns.

In September, the Spencer Preservation Group recommended that the room be removed after inspectors uncovered severely corroded iron columns connected to the structure’s tower. They also discovered that the lamp room floor is “fundamentally separate” from the catwalk slab.

This $2 million renovation project will entail a complete rebuild of the lantern room, including a new frame, new windows, and glazing and copper cladding.

Upgrades are expected to be completed by late spring or early summer 2023.

The lighthouse was first activated in 1810 and hasn’t undergone significant upgrades since the 1930s, according to the Scituate Historical Society.

The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
