SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The American Civil Liberties Union and defense attorneys are asking the highest court in Massachusetts to order an investigation into what they describe as rampant misconduct in the Springfield Police Department.
The petition filed Tuesday also calls for an investigation into whether prosecutors in the Hampden Country District Attorney’s Office are properly disclosing evidence of police misconduct.
A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office called it “a misdirected political effort supported by biased opinions and falsehoods.”
It comes after the Justice Department last year found that Springfield narcotics officers routinely used excessive force with no accountability.
