The fire began outside and extended inside the front and to all floors in the 2.5 story building, firefighters said. Every resident was able to escape on their safety, according to fire Chief Charles Breen.
“The only reason we’re out and alive right now is because a police officer broke down our front door pulled everyone out of their rooms,” said Willis Carter, 23, one of the residents.
Carter said fire alarms did not go off.
A deputy fire chief told Boston 25 News a police officer was called to the fire. Carter said he recognized him from the neighborhood, though it’s unclear if the unnamed officer lives near Bond Street.

Heat and humidity made the firefight more difficult. A third alarm was struck to bring more manpower and allow the crews that had been on scene battling the fire to recover, fire officials said.
A firefighter was treated for dehydration.
No cause for the fire has been determined. Fire investigators were on scene overnight to begin their investigation.
