31-year-old man shot multiple times on Waumbeck Street in Roxbury; 3 people arrested

BOSTON — Boston police are investigating after a 31-year-old man was shot several times on Waumbeck St. in Roxbury early Tuesday morning.

Boston Police Commissioner William Gross said an officer patrolling the area of Waumbeck and Crawford street heard the gunshots ring out just before 1:30 a.m.

“He immediately responded to the area and observed several suspects fleeing from that scene into a motor vehicle,” Gross said.

Gross said the officer chased the car to Codman Park, just around the corner. From there, the suspects jumped out of the car and started running away.

“During this foot pursuit, the officer discharged his department firearm,” Gross said. “The officer, as well as the three suspects, were not injured at this time.”

Gross said the three men were arrested and firearms were recovered from the scene. He said it’s too soon to say what charges they could face.

As is protocol, the officer who fired his weapon is being investigated by the Suffolk District Attorney’s office and the Boston Police Department’s Firearm Discharge Investigative Team.

On Waumbeck Street, police found a 31-year-old man suffering from several gunshot wounds outside. He was rushed to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Gross condemned the violence, which comes just days after a pair of shootings in Boston left two teenagers dead and another seriously hurt.

“Don’t think that our neighborhoods are desensitized to violence at all, the people do care,” said Gross. “The hyper-critics, I don’t see them out here. So we’ll continue to work with the neighborhoods.”

Speaking to reporters, Gross once again expressed frustration that prisoners are being released amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“What kind of message do you think we’re sending to the rest of the folks with criminal enterprise on their mind? ‘We can do what we want, the courts are closed’,” said Gross. “As always, thank you to the neighborhood for always calling us, always helping in these investigations.”
