2 contractors cited, fined by OSHA for deadly stairwell collapse in Cambridge in March

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Two contractors have been cited and fined tens of thousands of dollars by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for a deadly construction accident in Cambridge in March.

One construction worker was killed and another was injured on March 3 when an interior stairwell at a Cambridge parking garage collapsed just before 8:30 a.m. on First Street.

LBR Property Services LLC, based out of East Hartford, Connecticut, was cited for several “serious” violations and fined $20,480 by OSHA, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

They were cited for issues related to: duty to have fall protection, and removal of walls, masonry sections, and chimneys.

Another contractor, Structural Group Inc., based out of Columbia, Maryland, was also cited for several “serious” violations and fined $68,265 by OSHA, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Back on March 3, one of the workers, a 56-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a release from the Middlesex County DA’s Office. The other worker, a 41-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with significant chest and arm injuries, Cambridge fire officials said at the time.

The two men were helping replace an existing stairway as part of a renovation of the city-owned parking garage.
