16-year-old Ipswich bicyclist dies after being struck by pickup truck

IPSWICH, Mass. — A 16-year-old bicyclist died after he was struck by a pickup truck on Route 1A on Friday, police said.

At around 6:09 p.m., an Ipswich patrol officer witnessed a crash involving a truck and a bicyclist and began rendering first aid. The crash occurred on Route 1A across from the Southern Heights housing complex.

The teenage boy was treated at the scene for serious injuries. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

A preliminary investigation found that the driver of the truck was traveling northbound and the teen was traveling southbound in the northbound lane at the time of the crash.

The driver of the truck, a 61-year-old Manchester-by-the-Sea man, remained at the scene and was cooperative with police.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ipswich Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and the Essex District Attorney’s Office.
