Local woman making name for herself in male-dominated field

BOSTON — It is, for the most part, a male-dominated career. But according to the Statewide Towing Association, there are more women becoming tow operators.

Bianca Mojica is a tow operator with Todisco Towing in Boston. She's one of the very few women working in the industry and while she may get some funny looks when she pulls up, she says there's never any second guessing when they see her in action.

"It's a little stereotypical," said Mojica. "The reactions are never-ending. They are never new. I love figuring out the puzzle, you know what I mean. How am I going to get this out? What am I going to do? What's my next move."

Sky25 was flying overhead when Mojica handled a bad crash on the Mass. Pike. She and the Todisco team also handled a massive overturned vehicle in Cambridge in January.

"I don't have any limitations. I'm very handy. I'm very hands on. So, I catch on pretty quickly," said Mojica.

Mojica used to drive tractor-trailers so Todisco's huge rigs, she says, are easy to handle.

"It's almost like driving a pickup truck, honestly, just with a longer bed," she said.

But even in a huge truck, people not obeying the Move Over Law makes her work incredibly dangerous.

"It's not a lot we are asking for. Slow down before you approach the scene and it will make life so much easier," she said.

Towing officials say one tow driver dies every six days in the country. In Mass., they have lost three in the last five years.

"Not for just the tow operators, but for anyone on the side of the road because we all have families to go home to at the end of the day," said Matt Mazzarella, of Todisco Towing.

Todisco says they are always looking for new operators and Mojica hopes to see other eager women joining their team.

"It's not easy, but it's definitely fun. If you love action and love hands-on stuff, it's definitely something to be in," she said.
