Local restaurants gearing up for rush of Super Bowl takeout orders

NEWTON, Mass. — For restaurants across Massachusetts serving bar-style food, it’s game time. On the Saturday night before the Super Bowl, people waited outside of Buff’s Pub in Newton for their to-go orders to be filled.

According to bar manager Dave Morrissey, the restaurant, best known for its chicken wings, was taking roughly 200 orders per hour.

“People don’t want to be gathering, but you’ve still got to eat,” he said. “The last couple of days the phone hasn’t stopped ringing. If you’re trying to get through, keep calling; we are answering the phone.”

Morrissey added Super Bowl Sunday is always the pub’s busiest day of the year.

“We have a lot of people that are coming the day before to get their wings because tomorrow is by far our busiest day of the year,” he said.

Winn Weekes of Sudbury was one of those customers hoping to get a jump on picking up his game-day wings.

“My wife and I were just driving around, heading home, and she said, ‘you better go get your wings today.’ Because she knows I’ll be surly without them!” he told Boston 25 News. “I’ve been coming here since the 90s. Best wings in Boston.”

Many said the food is a tradition worth keeping while other Super Bowl plans have changed this year. Large gatherings remain discouraged by the CDC.

“We have a hockey game prior to the game, and then we’ll just watch at home with our family,” said customer Paul Ward of Holliston.

He added that even though Tom Brady is now playing for the Buccaneers, he’s still rooting for his favorite player.

“Absolutely I’m rooting for Tom Brady, he gave us 20 years of happiness. You can’t root against that man, and if you do root against him, you’re a fool,” he said. “Tomorrow we’ll wear our Michigan Tom Brady jerseys with our TB12 hats.”

The CDC recommends gathering virtually or with people you live with. For a full list of Super Bowl recommendations, click here.
