Lightning strikes just feet away from East Bridgewater home

EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — An East Bridgewater family had a close call on Saturday, as lightning struck just feet away from their home during the day's storms.

The East Bridgewater Police and Fire Departments dealt with flash flooding in the area, but the damage didn't come close to what was seen after the lightning.

In the end, East Bridgewater resident Tom Azar was left to pick up remnants of the damage throughout his backyard.

"There are pieces of it everywhere, like a bomb went off," Azar said.

Azar said he heard the noise from the strike, and ran outside to see what had happened.

"All of a sudden, an explosion, a loud bang, a flash of light," Azar said. "I thought the whole house exploded."

No one was injured in the incident, and the damage turned out to be minor, much to the pleasure of Azar.

"Fortunately it didn't hit the house and no one was hurt," Azar said. "It was pretty dramatic. I'm just glad I'm okay, my son is okay and my dog."

In the area of Azar's home, there were about 10 lightning strikes in the span of a half hour on Saturday afternoon.
