Lawrence police officer accused of raping teenage boy remains in jail

LAWRENCE, Mass. — The Lawrence police officer arrested this week for allegedly raping a 13-year-old boy he met on a social media app, will stay in jail, for now.

Carlos Vieira appeared in Salem Superior Court where his lawyer tried to get a judge to overturn a District Court judge's decision that is keeping him held without bail.

This week, Vieira was charged with two counts of child rape and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under fourteen.

Wednesday, a District Court judge said she agreed with Vieira's lawyer that he can't be held without bail while awaiting a dangerousness hearing because there was no violence alleged in the charges against him.

But, the District Court judge delayed her ruling, until the DA has a chance to appeal to the state’s highest court.

Thursday, a Salem Superior Court judge refused to step in, saying he has no jurisdiction.

The DA announced Thursday evening that the justice allowed their motion to stay. Vieira is ordered to file his appeal by March 5 and a hearing will take place March 6, if necessary.

Vieira will remain held until then.
