Investigation into high school football player's injury finds no evidence of wrongdoing

BOURNE, Mass. — The Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School senior varsity football player who was injured during a practice earlier this month has returned to school.

The player suffered a laceration to his head during an afternoon practice on September 11. He was flown by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital, where doctors determined he suffered a significant concussion.

Superintendent Robert Dutch told Boston 25 News on Thursday doctors haven’t cleared the player to return to the football field, but he has resumed regular school activities.

Dutch said an investigation into the injury didn’t find any evidence of wrongdoing of negligence.

“The injury was handled appropriately by the coaches, trainer and EMT's,” Dutch said. “As a result, the long-term potential effects have been minimized without any permanent damage,” Dutch said.

Dutch said he’s appreciative of everyone's efforts and thankful the young man is doing well.
