Heat sends beachgoers flocking to local shorelines

HULL, Mass. — The high heat had many opting for the beach on Sunday as parking lots in places like Nantasket Beach remained full until the late evening.

With a late afternoon low tide, there was more room available for beachgoers to spread out. Still, some parts remained packed.

“Once you stepped outside, the humidity just hit you,” said Leah Kattis, a Boston resident who visited Nantasket beach for the day.

Temperatures skyrocketed and many escaped the city to embrace the cool breeze in Hull. But along some parts of the sand, social distancing remained tough.

“It does scare us a little bit because obviously there are a bunch of people around us, but I think as long as we keep our distance, we’ll be fine,” Kattis said.

The parking lots were full and so were the beaches, but as the tide lowered, it was easier for people to give each other space. Tyarra McCall brought her family from Dorchester; she said it’s the first time all year they’ve been able to enjoy the water.

“The sun is doing us really good right now, we haven’t experienced it since last year, so we’re doing good, everything is good. The people are good, the atmosphere is good, the surroundings. No complaints at all,” McCall said.

Though some may be hesitant to venture out, McCall said the day trip was much needed.

“I feel free! We were on lockdown for about four months, so we feel absolutely free,” McCall said.
