Worcester indoor mask mandate takes effect today

WORCESTER, Mass. — Starting Monday, Worcester is requiring people to mask up indoors. New England’s second-largest city is putting the mandate back in place after experiencing another surge in COVID cases.

According to health officials, the positivity test rate here has increased tenfold since June. And that is one of the reasons why, starting Monday, people will have to wear masks indoors.

“We got to do what we got to do at this point because it’s the people who don’t want to get vaccinated or they can’t get vaccinated that it’s starting to affect them. Especially the small children that are unfortunately helpless at this time and situation,” said Amanda Ventura.

Worcester’s indoor mask mandate includes all indoor private common spaces—from grocery stores to private businesses and even the suites at Polar Park. Just last week, the city had over 500 cases.

“I think it’s an inconvenience, but I think it’s an inconvenience I can live with when I think about what the impact to the community might be,” said Ismael Rivera.

Health officials say there are currently 70 patients across the city that are waiting for beds because hospitals are full. Some people Boston 25 News spoke with aren’t happy about having to mask up again but understand why the city is requiring it.

“You have to do what you have to do. You want to do your part,” said Adam Sarnik. “Getting vaccinated is important. Wearing your mask is important. It’s the only thing we can do at this point. That’s the only option that we have.”

“I’m not happy I mean, we got to do what we got to do. I wish people would get vaccinated, and this wouldn’t be an issue,” said Jeremy Burque.

According to official numbers, 52% of Worcester residents are vaccinated, with about 60-percent receiving at least one shot. That’s below the state average of 67%. In addition to the mask mandate, Worcester is requiring all city employees to be fully vaccinated by November 1st or do weekly testing.
