Wellesley restaurants feeding local health care workers after community aids small businesses

WELLESLEY, Mass. — Some Wellesley restaurants hit hard by the pandemic are getting help from the community. In turn, they're helping to feed health care workers.

"We think this is a really good way to give back to those restaurants and to kind of give the community a sense of community again,' said Amelia Childs of the Rotary Club of Wellesley and owner of CrepeBerry.

This year’s ‘Taste of Wellesley,’ originally set for May 14, was canceled because of the pandemic.

In the past, it raised money for various charities, but the Rotary Club of Wellesley still wanted to help.

They set up a GoFundMe page to help local restaurants who’ve been forced to close or scale back.

"It's been a big change for us, for sure. Here in Wellesley, we rely a lot on the college students to help support small businesses like mine, and with them being gone that's been a big hit," Childs said.

In turn, they're still making meals but they're donating it to area health care workers at hospitals and nursing homes as a thank you.

"It's been really overwhelming at a time where we're all struggling. It's great that we can combine forces to do something for the restaurants. It's just like a chain-link effect of helping," Childs explained.

"Right now, they're helping us, and before, we're helping them," said Kitty Suen of Takara Japanese Restaurant. "This is such a great thing."

As many of those restaurants prepare to reopen, they're looking ahead.

“We’re already thinking forward. How do we keep everything safe? And working to tweak business models here and there,” Childs said.
