Pence takes message to New Hampshire voters

PORTSMOUTH, New Hampshire — Vice President Mike Pence spoke directly to blue collar workers in Portsmouth, New Hampshire at Port City Air on Wednesday.

Pence asked voters who they think is better poised to bring the economy fully back, Donald Trump or Joe Biden.

The campaign is intensifying as the calendar advances, just 13 days until Election Day. Portsmouth is part of Rockingham County which the president won by a narrow margin in 2016.

Trump supporters had their temperatures checked before heading onto the tarmac for the outdoor event. Some wore masks, others were seen without them.

The Vice President touched on topics from a COVID-19 vaccine, which he says is weeks away, and promising to hire more police officers, ban sanctuary cities, and teach children to love the country, while reminding them of the strong economy that existed before COVID-19 took over.

“Who is prepared for that?” said Lisa Wentworth of Rochester, New Hampshire of the pandemic.

Many Trump supporters speaking with Boston 25 News highlighted the economy as the main reason they are backing President Trump again.

“I think he’s already proven what he’s able to do with the economy,” said Anita Coons of West Newbury, Massachusetts.

Kate Bedingfield, campaign manager of challenger Joe Biden, a Democrat, said of Pence’s visit:

"Granite State families deserve better than four more years of the Trump-Pence administration’s failed leadership. During Vice President Pence’s disastrous tenure as head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, more than 220,000 Americans have died of COVID-19, 1 in 4 New Hampshire small businesses have shuttered and may never reopen, and the state is still down nearly 60,000 jobs. While families are struggling, President Trump and Vice President Pence are trying to strip away health protections from as many as 571,000 Granite Staters with pre-existing conditions.

After leaving New Hampshire, a spokesperson for Pence said he would be traveling to Ohio for a 6 p.m. event in Cincinnati.
