Nursing homes to allow indoor visitation for first time since March

BOSTON — On Friday, nursing homes across the state will be opening their doors for visitors for the first time since the pandemic broke out in mid-March.

The Baker-Polito Administration has announced there will be new visitation rules for nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Starting on Friday, Sept 25, nursing homes and rest homes will resume in-person visits, as long as safety measures are in place.

When it comes to safety, nursing homes and assisted living facilities will have to enforce the use of face coverings, social distancing and conduct temperature checks.

Small gestures, such as hand-holding and even hugs, which mean a lot to those who haven’t seen their families in a long time, may even be allowed again - as long as people are wearing masks and have cleaned their hands.

Assisted living residences were previously able to have in-unit visitation, but now they’ll be able to have indoor visits in shared spaces.
