New changes aboard Amtrak

BOSTON — Starting May 11, all customers on trains and at stations are required to wear a facial covering.

According to its new policy, the facial coverings can be removed when eating in designated areas, private rooms, sitting alone or with a companion. Amtrak says service will be denied to customers not wearing facial coverings.

The move comes one week after some airlines started requiring passengers to wear facial coverings.

Jet Blue, American and Delta are among the carriers requiring passengers to coverup their noses and mouths.

Other Amtrak changes to promote safety include:

  • Social distancing stickers: You’ll see floor stickers reminding people to remain 6-feet apart
  • Limited bookings: Only 50% of a train’s available seating is being sold
  • Cashless payments: At stations and on-board, cash will not be accepted

Amtrak's move to mask its passengers comes as some states are easing stay-at-home orders.

"Amtrak continues to operate as an essential service for those who must travel during this public health crisis. Our services will be even more critical as our nation recovers," said Bill Flynn, Amtrak President and CEO.

Meanwhile, the hustle and bustle at South Station has come to a halt as Amtrak has limited trains between Boston and New York City, only offering regional service. Amtrak says June 1, Acela trains will return along the Northeast corridor.
