N95 mask developed by Boston researchers sterilizes in oven, conforms to the face

BOSTON — Researchers in Boston are developing a reusable N95 mask alternative you can sterilize by heating in the oven.

The clear, silicone mask was created through a collaboration involving researchers with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and MIT. Those involved in the project hope what they’re developing will change the future of mask wearing for health care providers and the general public.

They told Boston 25 News the mask is not only comfortable and easy to sterilize but also allows a sense of interaction many have been missing while masked.

“If we’re out walking with masks on, it’s a very blunted interaction. You don’t know if someone is smiling,” said Dr. Giovanni Traverso with Brigham and Women’s & MIT. “We’re aiming for a solution to meet the needs for both the general public and health care professionals.”

Dr. Giovanni Traverso, a gastroenterologist and biomedical engineer, said the silicone rubber material can withstand intense heat.

According to Traverso, the mask can be sterilized by the average person in the oven.

“Literally you can place it in the oven directly, and it’s not going to melt. You can put it at 300 degrees and you would be okay,” said Traverso.

Traverso told Boston 25 News the reusable mask can easily change in size and is receiving positive feedback in its second round of clinical trials.

“We actually scanned the face of folks who are testing this, and found that it fits a fairly broad range of different face sizes,” said Traverso.

Traverso said the see through masks could also benefit those who are hearing impaired by allowing others to see lip movement.

“In the initial version, the filter was over the lips. In the next generation, the lips will be easier to visualize,” said Traverso.

Researchers are currently trying to receive emergency use authorization from the FDA for the masks.

Traverso estimates the mask, which filters particles similar to an N95, will come at a price tag of about $10 to $20.
