Lawmakers call for investigation of COVID-19 outbreak at Chelsea Soldiers’ Home

CHELSEA, Mass. — Federal lawmakers are urging Governor Charlie Baker to appoint an independent investigator to look into what caused the coronavirus outbreak at the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home, where 31 veterans died after becoming infected with the virus.

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, along with Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, say they believe an independent investigation could help prevent future infections and ensure a healthier and safer environment for both residents and staff.

In a letter to Baker Friday, the lawmakers wrote:

Like the families of veterans who died or became infected from COVID-19 at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, the families of Chelsea Soldiers’ Home veterans who have suffered from this disease deserve meaningful, lasting accountability and reforms. An independent inquiry can help facilitate such results.
